Photo Credit: https://www.ozassignments.com/preventing-health-threads-through-lifestyle-change-for-students/ Lifestyle generally referred to as healthy food habits, physical activity, good mental health with proper sleep and stress management. With changing economical, geopolitical, and climatic conditions lot us are going through stressful conditions like losing jobs, homes, loved ones and especially bread earners and struggling to maintain decent standards of living. People with decent standard of living the riches, middleclass are also suffering with a lot of health conditions, illnesses due to poor lifestyle choices. Whoever it is and whatever we earn there is still an opportunity to make incremental steps towards healthy lifestyle. I would like to set the context with an article written for United Nations (UN) on  Lifestyle diseases , the author mentioned   “Today, chronic diseases are a major public health problem worldwide. In 2005, the World Health Organizati...

Should you be Vegan ?

This world vegan day (November 1st) let’s try to understand from a vegan’s perspective. We often referred to as alarmists, extremists, rebellion, preachy, pushy, opinionated, saints, moral police etc., but in my we view we are realists. What is vegan anyway? It is reducing or minimising unnecessary suffering caused to any living being which has feelings, central nervous system and capacity to suffer.  It is about choosing alternatives in what we eat, what we wear, what we shop, what we pay for entertainment etc., Animals are being exploited for food, fast fashion including cosmetics, entertainment, testing of drugs etc., We humans give ourselves moral authority as someone capable at the top of food chain and consider some animals as incapable, can be controlled and used for our needs as commodities, something most commonly referred as speciesism.   We humans have innate nature to love animals and can’t see them suffer in pain in front of our eyes but we somehow d...

Friend : Nice to see you after a long time my friend Me: Same here, good to catch up! Friend: You seem to reduce a lot of weight, are you in some crazy diet or something? Me: No buddy, I eat more to reduce weight or keep it in check! Friend : Wait a second, did I hear that right, eat more to reduce weight, how is that even possible? Me: What we eat, how we eat, what time we eat and in what format matters a lot to keep weight in check. Friend : Let me make some tea before we discuss this further, same old Ginger, Cardamom Tea? Me: No, Black tea with 1 tea-spoon sugar, you can add ginger and cardamom though! Friend : I see a lot of changes in first few minutes of conversation, Am I talking to same old buddy drinking tea 2-3 times a day with creamy milk? What’s more in store for me pal! Me: As the times changes it demands a lot from each one of us, we must change and act accordingly. Friend : That is loaded statement sounded like saint, why no milk though? Me: If you have a ...

Sustainability for all - Why everyone must act now!

When it comes to sustainability, we look up to the sky for solar and wind energy to solve many of  our problems. Well, I do hope we need to shift to renewable energy sources but as per the  plans outlined by various governments and businesses to reduce dependency on fossil fuels,  we are too late for the climate catastrophe and to the extent of mass extinction. There are other aspects that need attention especially we must look within as I wrote in another article to understand the diversity that exists in human body to appreciate the importance of biodiversity and be grounded to look under the feet to understand the importance of soil and water.   Unfortunately, a lot of us are still thinking that my tap is running, and my house is not burning, it is somebody else’s problem to solve. At one hand there is a lot of denial / ignorance on climate change and hopelessness at another hand that we are ruined, and nothing can be changed, so let us use all resources...

Diversity - A Perspective

Image
Photo Credit: https://asiapacificreport.nz/2018/03/04/gender-and-diversity-research-at-aut-turns-10/ The topic of diversity has seen a great deal of interest in recent years as an important aspect to be developed and imbibed as part of the culture in every organization. Lot of companies are making efforts to bring in cultural changes by educating their employees on diversity, inclusion and equity at work realizing the benefits with the shift in thinking in all aspects. Despite all the efforts there is still a lot of ground to cover as it relates to change in belief system breaking the unconscious biases with conscious efforts by everyone. In my honest attempt, I tried to put in a perspective that can help understand and appreciate the aspect of diversity better by bringing in the essence of human survival at  individual level  and on  planet earth .  I need to tell a story from the book  “The Biology of Belief”  about aspiring medical students as described...
